What’s ‘Deep Dive’ All About?

Since the release of my book ‘Deep Dive: Exploring the Real-world Value of Open Source Intelligence’ I have received several questions about the contents and what sets my book apart from others on the market. I just wanted to take a moment to answer your questions and give a list of the Table of Contents.

What’s unique about my book?

When I set out to write Deep Dive I didn’t want to recreate the wheel or rehash things that other prominent OSINT authors have done. The books that exist have amazing content that is highly valuable to your OSINT journey. However, I found that when I was first learning OSINT concepts I had a difficult time applying the tools and techniques I consumed. Imagine reading a whole book or taking an entire OSINT course and then sitting down in front of your own case… where do you begin? To try to fill this gap I focused on 4 main things:

  1. What?

  2. Why?

  3. How?

  4. See For Yourself.

What?
What is the history, the background, the reason for the thing? If it’s social media intelligence, what exactly is it? We can’t begin without knowing what it is we are doing.

Why?
Why are we doing what we are doing? If I am searching for a person WHY might I want to start with their social media presence? It’s easier to take the next step when we understand why.

How?
How do we do the collection, pivoting, analyzing, reporting on the things we find? By learning METHODOLOGY vs. tools, you will learn to think like an analyst and should then be able to apply any tool to your workflow. We can learn a hundred tools and yet never be great analysts.

See For Yourself
Now that you know what the technique is, why we would implement this technique, how to implement the technique, it’s time to read a real-life example of that technique being used. The best way to learn is to read stories and examples from other cases.

Combining these 4 concepts I feel will better facilitate learning how to start with OSINT. But wait! Deep Dive is not just for beginners! I have also included chapters on rarely covered topics including transportation OSINT methodology, financial intelligence, and critical infrastructure. Check out the Table of Contents below:
