Rescue Boats and Google Searches

Tuesday’s QuizTime puzzle was a fun one posted by Lars Wienand that centered around a boat in a mysterious body of water. “Where did I take the photo?” he asks. Well, I am going to tell you how I solved this one using Google Search and some collaboration.

SPOILERS BELOW

The first thing I did was a reverse image search on the photo but that turned up zero details. Next, I copied the image into photoshop and blew up the lettering on the side “Rettungsboot, SAMA 16/88–2 SASB”. I knew from experience that this would be a location in or around Germany so I Googled “Rettungsboot Germany” which translated Rettungsboot to “Rescue Boat.”

Daniel finds the boat number in a photo

At this point, I assumed it would be easy to find the boat registration numbers somewhere online but this turned out to be harder than I thought. I noticed Daniel Laufer had located an article showing the boat numbers but noted a different location of Mittel-Brandenburg.

Great job Daniel!

Clicking on Daniel’s article showed me not only what ABS was (Rescue Training) but also showed me where the training center was located.

With Daniel’s help in finding the article, I was quickly able to do an image search on “Holzer See near Groß Köris” and come up with a photo showing a similar outcropping of trees as the article photo.

From here I decided I had enough verification to make my guess!

This was my first official QuizTime victory and in the future, I hope to gain more knowledge on the various search methods rather than just guessing semi-randomly. If you want to learn more about QuizTime you can find more writeups here.
